The art of using turntables and a mixer as instruments rather than playback devices, built on the scratching and beat-juggling techniques developed by Grand Wizzard Theodore, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa in 1970s New York. DJ Babu of the Beat Junkies coined the word "turntablist" in 1995, as crews like Invisibl Skratch Piklz and the X-Ecutioners turned it into a competitive discipline.
