The fast, distorted extreme of early-1990s rave: hardcore techno pushed past 160 BPM on an overdriven kick, splitting away from UK breakbeat hardcore into harder Dutch and Belgian strains. Rotterdam Records, Euromasters and Paul Elstak set the template around 1991–92, and the sound branched onward into gabber, breakcore and beyond.
