About

An umbrella term for the fast, kick-driven end of dance music — UK hard house, hardstyle, hardcore and their offshoots — rather than one specific sound. It took shape in late-1990s UK clubs (Tidy Trax, Trade at Turnmills) and the Dutch rave scene, with Andy Farley, Lisa Lashes and the Q-dance circuit as reference points. Usually 145–160 BPM with a distorted offbeat kick.
