About

The rhythm-first Black American style James Brown built in the mid-1960s by pushing the emphasis onto the downbeat, expanded by Sly & the Family Stone, Parliament-Funkadelic and Bootsy Collins across the 1970s. Its basslines and drum breaks became the raw material for hip hop, house and nearly every dance genre that followed. In a lineup it usually signals live-band or sample-driven groove rather than 4/4 club music.
