breakbeat

Any dance music built on a syncopated, sampled drum break rather than a straight four-to-the-floor kick — the lineage running from 1970s funk breaks through 1980s hip hop into 1990s UK rave. The Amen, Funky Drummer and Think breaks are its raw material; the Chemical Brothers, Adam Freeland and the Florida breaks scene shaped it as a club genre.
